Lusaka mother arrested over death of her baby

POLICE in Lusaka have arrested a 23 year-old woman of George Township for allegedly suffocating her baby to death after she slept on him.

In a statement to Mwebantu, Police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga stated that the incident happened between 22:00 hours on Sunday and 06:00 hours yesterday.

“We have detained Elizabeth Banda, aged 23 years old, after we received a report from her mother, Mary Phiri of house number 260/16 George Township, to the effect that she had slept over her three month old baby who later died,” Mr. Hamoonga stated.

He added that the body of the baby was in the University Teaching Hospital awaiting an autopsy.
