Lungu Asked to Return Benefits to the State

The Southern Africa Network Against Corruption- SANAC says former President EDGAR LUNGU must return the benefits paid to him during the time he stated that he had resigned from active politics.

SANAC Executive Director GREGORY CHIFIRE says the former President was NOT truthful in his resignation letter to Cabinet as the intention was allegedly to mislead a public officer.

Mr. CHIFIRE says Mr. LUNGU, therefore, risks prosecution if any member of the public reports him to the police.

He has since called on Parliament to lift Mr. LUNGU’s immunity so that he is able to answer to a number of issues he has been accused of.

In a statement issued to ZNBC News in Lusaka today, Mr. CHIFIRE said by lifting the immunity of the former President, he will be accorded an opportunity to exonerate himself.

He also explained that the Constitution clearly defines active politics, as doing any act indicating the person’s intention to hold elective office or appointive office.
