Livingstone Cooperative Producing Cooking Oil from Wild Fruits

By Moombe Hamobola

A Livingstone based oil processing co-operative says over twelve wild fruit tree varieties  in the district have the potential to produce cooking oil.

Booma Women cooperative Technical Advisor, STEVEN TEMBO, says a study conducted in the area has reviewed that wild fruit varieties such as baobab and Amarula trees can produce edible oil.

Booma Women Cooperative is currently processing cooking oil from Mungongo seeds.

Mr. TEMBO has urged the government to formulate policies that will introduce serious punishment on those found cutting down trees.

He says the cooking oil made from Mungongo tree is low in cholesterol levels and high in antioxidants which prevent cancer and has  anti-inflammatory properties among other benefits.

Meanwhile, Booma Women cooperative Chairperson, LUCY NCHOBENI said the
Mungongo cooking oil has been used for a long time.

The cooperative has already produced over one thousand litres of cooking oil from Mungongo nuts.
