LAZ Speaks Out On M’membe’s Arrest

LAZThe Law Association of Zambia has spoken out for incarcerated Post Newspapers Editor in Chief Fred M’membe labelling the actions of the police high handed.

On Monday night the police arrested M’membe, his wife Mutinta and deputy Managing Editor Joseph Mwenda for attempting to enter the premises of the closed offices at Bwinjimfumu road armed with a court order from the Revenues Tribunal.

The trio was bundled away in a police van and locked up at the Lusaka Central Police.

LAZ president Linda Kasonde told a media briefing that the actions by the Zambia Revenue Authority were worrying as they had been excessive.

Kasonde though not spelling out any action LAZ may take called for the speedy normalization of the situation.

She said the action by the police was in bad faith and signalled a breakdown in law and order.

Debate on the matter has hinged on whether the ZRA has acted under political instructions or were merely carrying out their statutory duties.

The figure at the heart of the debate is K53 million that the paper disputes.

Meanwhile, the paper has remained closed but has been publishing under an underground alternative.

M’membe is also a lawyer and active LAZ member.
