LASF JUSTIFIES DECISION TO COMPEL RETIREES TO SUBMIT LIFE CERTIFICATES WHEN ACCESSING PENSION FUNDS

By Lukundo Nankamba

The Local Authorities Superannuation Fund-LASF has clarified that the requirement for retirees to submit life certificates when accessing pension funds is intended to help the authority ascertain that a member is still alive and entitled to receive the life pension.

Reacting to a statement by Green Party Leader Peter Sinkamba that the process of providing life certificates to get funds is unnecessary as councils have databases and know which employee worked with them, LASF Acting Head Corporate Communication Tiyese Sakala says the requirement for annual and bi annual submission of life certificates is the only thing that can ascertain the continued eligibility of members to receive life pension.

Ms Sakala says this measure has been taken to ensure that pension is paid to the rightful and eligible beneficiaries.

But Mr Sinkamba has maintained that the measure is still unnecessary as it will only pro long the process of acquiring funds for retirees who he says have been waiting for a long time to access the funds.
