Lake Tanganyika human activities worrying

(ZANIS)The Ministry of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection has expressed concern over the alarming rate of human activities on and around Lake Tanganyika.The Ministry is concerned that the human activities are threatening the biodiversity of the Lake.Permanent Secretary Mabvuto Sakala says unsustainable agriculture and fishing, water pollution through domestic and industrial waste, as well as population growth are destroying the socio economic development of the Lake basin.Mr Sakala has since called on members of the Lake Tanganyika Authority -LTA- Management Committee to devise mechanisms to address the environmental challenges confronting the biodiversity of the Lake.He was speaking during the 9th ordinary meeting of the Management Committee and 8th Conference of Ministers which has opened in Chilanga, today.The meeting is being attended by delegates from Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Zambia.Mr Sakala said the Zambian government is committed to work with other countries on interventions aimed at reversing environmental degradation as well as promote regional cooperation in order to improve the livelihood of the people around the Lake basin.He emphasized the need to protect the integrity of Lake Tanganyika and it’s basin as it is a global hotspot of biodiversity endowed with abundant ecological services.And LTA Acting Executive Director Nyakorema Marwa disclosed that Africa Development Bank and the World Bank, among others, are planning to support several activities of about 10 million people in the Lake Tanganyika region.The Management Committee Meeting will culminate into the holding the conference of Ministers of Environmental Sanitation on Friday, February 14th.
