Lack Of Progress On Bailout Package Discussions Between Government And IMF Worrying

By Chileshe Mwango

The Centre for Trade Policy and Development-CTPD- is concerned with prolonged exchanges between government and the International Monetary Fund-IMF- and has no substantive indication of progress being made towards the finalization or agreement of a formal program.

CTPD observes that despite the ministry of finance and the IMF agreeing to use the economic recovery plan as a foundation for a more detailed policy reform agenda aimed at restoring public finance sustainability, the talks seem to have yielded nothing critically substantive.

CTPD Researcher for Public Finance Wakumelo Mataa says it is in the public domain that there are no commitments or timelines and neither the IMF nor government has furnished the public with specific details of what remains to be done before an extended credit facility program can be agreed upon.

The Ministry of Finance held formal talks with the IMF from 11th February to 3rd March 2021, to request a formal IMF program under the extended credit facility window which the ministry described as positive.
