Labour Commissioner unhappy with some FQM Contractors

By Lupindula Mwewa

Labour Commissioner GIVENS MUNTENGWA says some contractors at First Quantum Minerals – FQM Trident Limited in Kalumbila District are not respecting labour laws.

Mr. MUNTENGWA says the mine is engaging contractors that are not remitting their employees’ contributions to the National Pension Scheme Authority -NAPSA.

He says various contractors at the mine have a large workforce and non-remission of NAPSA contribution is negatively affecting the country’s social protection.

Speaking when Labour and Social Security Minister BRENDA TAMBATAMBA met with management at the Mine, Mr. MUNTENGWA said contractors have also not registered their employees on the National Health Insurance Scheme – NHIMA.

And Ms. TAMBATAMBA said government wants to protect workers by ensuring that employers abide by the labour laws of the land.

Meanwhile, Trident Limited General Manager JUNIOR KEYSER said the mine is aware that some contractors at the mine are not complying with labour laws.
