Kitwe’s Kawama Area Flooded Leaving Some Houses Submerged In Water

By Michael Kaluba

Various houses in Kitwe’s Kawama area have been submerged in water after Tuesday night’s heavy downpour in an area where flooding is a perennial occurrence.

The area has had no drainage system and a proper road network since its creation which leads to flooding of homes every rainy season with over 25 houses submerged in 2019.

Some affected Kawama residents are disappointed that the problem of flooding has not been dealt with despite several assurances from the local leadership and complained that the leadership has failed to deal with the matter despite similar disasters occurring in past years.

The affected residents told phoenix news in the area that their ward Councilor Bonny Kaonga has failed to address their challenges and has not shown up in the area for a long time.

Efforts to get both Kitwe District Commissioner who is also district disaster management taskforce chairperson and Kawama ward councillor Bonny Kaonga proved futile by broadcast time as their mobile phones went unanswered and unreachable respectively.
