Kitwe derby stays at Nkana Stadium

Zambia Super League giants Nkana have clarified that the first Kitwe derby of the 2022/2023 season will be held at their home, Nkana Stadium.

The 13 time Champions were reacting to a number of social media stories which were indicting that the derby was going to be held at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

According to a post on the club’s official Facebook page, the club EXCO had decided in their last meeting that the derby be played at Nkana Stadium.

“KINDLY disregard this advert which is making rounds in some social media platforms suggesting that the Kitwe Derby ( Nkana FC vs Power Dynamos) will be held at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium. Please note that this is NOT the position of the Nkana FC Executive Committee. EXCO in its last meeting resolved to have the Derby played at Nkana Stadium (PaChilata).

Please take this as the official position of the Club.”

The ZamFoot Crew understands that talks were underway to have the derby moved to a bigger venue with Football House, Nkana, MTN and Supersport all involved in the discussions.

A source told the ZamFoot Crew that Nkana were initially agreeable to the idea and only backed out late last week.

In the past Nkana CEO Kelvin Mutafu has hinted on the idea of commercializing the Kitwe derby by moving it to a bigger venue like Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

“Going forward, there is a need to commercialize this Great Zambian Derby by looking for sponsors. I am sure you all have observed the thriller that it brings and you will all attest to the fact that there is nothing like the Kitwe Derby in our Super League.

Our plan is to engage our colleagues ( Power Dynamos) and see if we can be hosting it at a bigger stadium like Levy Mwanawasa.  Yesterday we noticed how many of our fans couldn’t  get into the stadium due to limited capacity, hence, we will take advantage of our huge following to pioneer this issue so that the Derby can be a money-spinner for both teams,” Mutafu said back in April in his CEO corner weekly update.

Nkana will host their arch rivals Power Dynamos on Saturday, 19th November at the Nkana Stadium.
