Kitwe Council to pay retirees after Mopani pay out

By Hector Simfukwe

Kitwe City Council will this week pay all its retirees following the decision by Mopani Copper Mines to pay 87- million Kwacha owed to the Local Authority.

Council Town Clerk PATRICK KAMBITA says apart  from paying all the retirees, the Local Authority will pay its statutory obligations to institutions like NAPSA  .

Mr. KAMBITA says Mopani has managed to clear the debt  owed to the Council  from as far back as 2021.

He told ZNBC News that Kitwe City Council will ensure that the revenue collected  from the mine trickles down to communities through improved service delivery.

He said the people of  Kitwe will be happy because the district will become a hive of activity due to the works on the roads and street lights among others .

Meanwhile, Rokana Ward Councilor MACMILLIAN MBAO said the payment of the debt to the Council by Mopani Mine is testament that President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’s mining policies  are  working .

Mr. MBAO said his people are happy because part of the 87 million Kwacha will be used in his ward to work on the roads and street lights.

He said Counselors also want the council to be using the money collected from the  mining giant to buy additional earth moving equipment for the people of Kitwe.
