KANYAMA FLOOD VICTIMS MAYBE RELOCATED

By  Luyando Hamwaala -The Lusaka District administration is considering relocating flood victims in Kanyama to Makeni Villa.

Lusaka District Commissioner, David Silubanje says the plan is to relocate the affected families to a flood free area as a long term measure.

Meanwhile Mr Silubanje says the drainage project that unlock the flooded area of Kanyama has delayed because some houses will have to be demolished to pave the way for construction of drainages.

He however noted that 80 percent of works have been done in the construction of drainages in Lusaka’s Kanyama compound, where floods have affected some households.

And the affected residents talked to say they are living in fear of waterborne diseases outbreak.

And the Disasater Management and Mitigation Unit -DMMU- has started relocating some residents of Lusaka’s Kuku compound, who have been affected by floods.

The families, whose houses are in the vicinity of the Ngwenya dam, are being evacuated  to other parts of the compound, which are not affected by floods.

And DMMU Regional Coordinator for Lusaka Province, Milton Malaya  says more facilities will be set up to accommodate other affected families.
