“JOURNALISTS SHOULD PROBE ZAMBIA RED CROSS BUILDING SALE”

By Brian Mwale-President Edgar Lungu has challenged journalists to investigate alleged corruption in the sale of Zambia Red Cross Society -ZRSC- buildings in Lusaka.

President Lungu says people involved in the sale of the public buildings need to be known by the masses

He said crying over corruption will not help in anyway but fighting the vice through bringing out the names of those involved.

Speaking during a virtual meeting with ZRSC Officials and some regional stakeholders, President Lungunoted the cardinal role that the society plays in humanitarian works but however expressed concern at its mismanagement.

And President Lungu said it was difficult to grant the society a debt relief for the 2 million Kwacha owed to Zambia Revenue Authority and over 3 million kwacha owed to NAPSA which includes penalties because the funds are needed to finance the country’s social and economic projects.

He however advised ZRCS management to engage the two institutions on the matter and see how best they can settle the outstanding debts.

And ZRCS President Frackson Ngosa said the society is struggling with high level of indebtness despite the institution having employed various measures.

Mr. Ngosa said the society is in heavy debt owing to mismanagement, loss of its property and legal fees because it has lost many cases owing to poor representation.

He also noted that the society currently has about 70-million kwacha raised from donors but cannot be used for administrative purposes but intended humanitarian needs.

He appealed to the President to help increase the monthly allocation to the society from the current 33-miilion kwacha to 500 million kwacha through the Ministry of Health.
