It is unattainable to declare dry spells a disaster – Wina

Vice President Inonge Wina says government has no intentions of declaring a national disaster arising from the dry spells and severe flooding some parts of the Country are currently experiencing.

Mrs. Wina says such a decision cannot be made when other parts of the Country, apart from the Southern part of Zambia, are still receiving good rainfall.

She has told Parliament during the Vice President’s Question Time that if a disaster is to be declared, such a decision will only be made in particulars areas experiencing dry spells.

Mrs. Wina has further allayed fears that there will be hunger in the Country given the poor or no rainfall being experienced in some parts of the Country.

She has told the House that the Northern part of the Country that is receiving sufficient rainfall will be able to feed the entire nation for months to come.

The Vice President adds that government has enough resources to deal with any disaster that may arise during the current rainy season.

She was responding to a question by Leader of the opposition Jack Mwiimbu.

And Mrs. Wina has clarified that government is not going against the will of the Zambian people by enacting a law for National Dialogue on the Constitution refinement process.

She states that government has only taken the lead in ensuring that there is no further postponement of the National Dialogue as the case has been in the past.

Meanwhile the Vice President has urged the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to enforce the law that allows it to bar a political party or candidate that breaks electoral rules during election campaigns.

She says government wants to the ECZ to flex its muscle and preside over all matters of electoral violence in the Country.

Mrs. Wina states that government does not want to see any further acts of political violence in the Country.
