INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

(ZANIS) Community Development and Social Services Minister DOREEN MWAMBA has directed local authorities to ensure persons with disability are included in the composition of Ward Development Committees -WDCs.

And, Mrs MWAMBA says government is ready to provide employment opportunities and strengthen a quota system of employment for persons with disabilities hence selecting them as WDCs.

She says appointments of persons with disabilities to influential positions remains a priority in the spirit of not leaving anyone behind

Mrs. MWAMBA said this during the International Day of persons with disabilities at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola today.

She urged the Zambia Agency for Persons with disabilities -ZAPD- to create a database for persons with disabilities with their qualifications to assist in the procedure of appointments.

And Mrs MWAMBA said the local authorities should construct roads and buildings with universally acceptable designs to accommodate persons with disabilities.

MEANWHILE, Acting UN Resident Coordinator, and UNICEF Zambia Representative NOALA SKINNER encouraged person with disability to actively participate in national activities adding that disability should not be set as barrier to participate in national develop
ent.

And Persons with disabilities Representative PETER BWALYA has appealed to the government to help persons with disabilities access social cash transfer as a way of mitigating some of the challenges they face.

He said employment is also part of the main issues faced by persons with disabilities hence the need for government to consider them as they create employment for the people nationwide.
