INSURE LIVESTOCK -CHIKOTA

Fisheries and Livestock Minister MAKOZO CHIKOTE has urged Livestock farmers across the country to have their animals insured to avoid complete losses in an event of natural disasters due to climate change.

Speaking during the handover of livestock animals to some small-scale farmers in Namwala District for the livestock stocking and restocking programme through the Pass-on Initiative under the Enhanced Smallholder Livestock Investment Programme being impleme
ted by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Mr CHIKOTE said farmers should realise that climate change is real, and can be disastrous to livestock, hence the need for to have their animals insured.

Mr CHIKOTE says government is working on strategies to help livestock farmers insure their animals so as to prepare for eventualities that come with climate change shocks.

He has further encouraged livestock farmers to venture into the production of forage and ensure that there is feed for livestock even in dry seasons.

He says government is taking measures to address various challenges in the livestock sector such as inadequate livestock infrastructure, transport as well as marketing so as to make the industry viable and contribute significantly to the country’s economy.

And Southern Province Minister CORNELIUS MWEETWA has directed the police in the Province to step up efforts to curb livestock theft, which is on the rise in the region.

Mr MWEETWA says rampant cattle rustling has become a serious challenge for livestock farmers in the province, hence the need for the police to help curb the vice.

He has urged members of the communities to cooperate with police providing information and help to identify cattle rustlers.

And Namwala District Council Chairperson ABEL MOONGA has appealed to government to address the challenge of livestock infrastructure and transport in the area.
