IMF hands over governance,graft report to govt

Brian Mwale-The International Monetary Fund -IMF- has handed over the Zambia Diagnostic Report on Governance and Corruption to President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA.

The Report was handed over to the President, by IMF Resident Representative PREYA SHARMA, on behalf of the Mission Chief for the assignment TINA BURJALIANI.

The Governance Diagnostic Report was prepared following a request to the IMF by the President in November last year.

The Assessment Report is intended to support continued reform and progress in establishing effective governance arrangements and the rule of law.

And speaking during the virtual handover President HICHILEMA re-reiterated his administration’s continued commitment in the fight against corruption, including the independence of governance and law enforcement agencies.

He said his government is committed to upholding the separation of powers and vital measures such as enhancing access to information.

The President further emphasised that the fight against corruption was a key cornerstone of his administration.

President HICHILEMA also highlighted other on-going legal reforms and measures such as: strengthening legislation related to anti-money laundering and funding of terrorism legislation such as the Securities and Exchange Act and the Public Debt Management Ac
.

Speaking at the same function, Finance and National Planning Minister SITUMBEKO MUSOKOTWANE re-affirmed government’s commitment in fighting corruption.

Dr. MUSOKOTWANE also thanked the IMF for working tirelessly to produce the Report.

The Zambia’s diagnostic assessment focused on identifying governance weaknesses and corruption vulnerabilities in critical priority areas such as anti-corruption and anti-money laundering; fiscal governance; enforcement of contracts and protection of proper
y rights among others.
