IMF ASSURES ZAMBIA OF SUPPORT

By Ruth Chayinda:

The International Monetary Fund -IMF- says it is eager to support Zambia with a programme after the creditors conclude the debt restructuring process.

IMF Deputy Managing Director ANTOINETTE SAYEH says the Fund is happy with the efforts by Zambia to restructure its debt and will continue to render support.

Ms. SAYEH says it is the desire of the IMF to deepen the partnership with Zambia through an ambitious programme.

The IMF Deputy Managing Director said this when she paid a courtesy call on President HICHILEMA at State House today.

She also congratulated President HICHILEMA and government for the steps taken to restructure the country’s debt.

And President HICHILEMA said the decision to engage the IMF to get on a programme is not an adopted agenda but one that the UPND contemplated doing while in the opposition.

He said the UPND Administration is committed to the IMF path as Government rebuilds the economy.

The President said the IMF is not foreign to Zambia and stated that there is need for the country to stay on course even when it gets difficult.

The Head of State said despite the hardships the country may encounter while implementing the programme, there will be need to support each other.

President HICHILEMA further disclosed that Chinese President XI JINPING has confirmed that his country is on board and will support Zambia.

Finance Minister SITUMBEKO MUSOKOTWANE said the meetings with the IMF and Creditors give hope to the Zambian people.
