HIV Prevalence rate among youth rises

Vice President MUTALE NALUMANGO says 90,000 adolescent Zambians aged between 10 and 19 are living with HIV.

Mrs. NALUMANGO however says HIV/AIDS annual infection rates in the country statistically reduced to 33% in 2022 against 43% in 2021.

Mrs NALUMANGO was speaking in LUSAKA at University of Zambia Great East Road Campus , during the commemoration for the 2023 National HIV/AIDS Testing, Counselling and Treatment day .

And, Health Minister SYLVIA MASEBO acknowledged that there is an alarming HIV/AIDS prevalence among the adolescents in Zambia.

Ms. MASEBO appealed to youths to take a lead in AIDS Testing to secure their future.

Meanwhile, Lusaka Province Minister SHEAL MULYATA said the fight against HIV/AIDS must always be part of government’s political agenda.

And, UNAIDS Country Director, THARCISSE BARIHUTA called on young people to prioritise HIV/AIDS testing and counselling.
