HIGH FATALITIES WORRYING – TAMBATAMBA

By Paul Shalala:

Labour Minister BRENDA TAMBATAMBA is worried that the newly opened mines across the country are recording high fatalities.

The minister says there is need for safety to be enhanced in the mining industry.

Ms TAMBATAMBA says well established mines have lesser fatalities than the new mines which are springing up in the country.

Speaking when she inaugurated the Board of Directors for the Occupational Health and Safety Institute in Kitwe this morning, Ms TAMBATAMBA directed the institute to enhance its operations and promote safety in the mines.

The Labour Minister said recent deaths recorded in the mining sector have been saddening and has asked the Board of Directors to give strategic guidance to the management.

Ms TAMBATAMBA later thanked the Occupational Health and Safety Institute for its desire to diversity its inspection and checks to the Agriculture and Construction sectors.

She said safety is paramount and the institute must open branches across the country to ensure it executes its mandate in the 10 provinces of the country.

And Occupational Health and Safety Institute Director MARTHA CHAKULIMBA said the institute is formulating short courses which it intends to provide to tertiary institutions to help students have safety lessons.

Dr. CHAKULIMBA said many institutions do not include safety in their curriculum and the institute is preparing Memoranda of Understanding so that the institute can provide the lessons.
