Green Eagles makes the cut

By Matimba Nkonje-Green Eagles football club head coach Aggrey Chiyangi is impressed with his team’s work rate in yesterday’s CAF Champions League match in which the Zambian side bundled out Orlando Pirates of South Africa from the competition.ZNBC’s Matimba Nkonje reports from Johannesburg in South Africa that Chiyangi in a post-match interview said his players worked hard for them to record a 1-1 all draw away against Pirates thereby qualifying to the first round of the competition.Chiyangi, who also doubles as chipolopolo stand in coach, said his team implored a tight marking game on Pirates thereby restricting the Bucs clear cut shots on goal. The Eagles Coach was also full of international goalkeeper Sebastian Mwange who put up some breath-taking saves to deny Pirates the victory, describing him as the future Zambia national team first coach goal custodian.Meanwhile, Chiyangi said history has been made by Green Eagles after kicking out Orlando Pirates from the CAF Champions League. He said many people had underrated the Zambia National Service (ZNS) sponsored side when the fixture was announced against Pirates.Chiyangi says many had predicted that Eagles would lose both at home and away but that history has been made and written following Tonka Tweende’s qualification to the first round of the CAF Champions League in its debut appearance. For kicking Pirates out of the CAF Champions League, Green Eagles who last year competed in the CAF Confederations Cup, will now host Primeiro De Agosto of Angola who earned a berth against Eagles after drawing scoreless yesterday in Luanda against KMKM of Zanzibar. The Angolan side had won the first leg away 2-0 in Zanzibar.Eagles will host Agosto on September 14 before making the trip to Angola for the second leg expected to be played on the weekend of September 27-29.The Zambian team is expected back in the country this afternoon(Sunday).
