Govt Working On Policies That Will Help Improve Earnings From Cross Border Trade Of Agricultural Related Commodities

Government is through the Ministry of Agriculture seeking to adopt and harmonize policies that will help the country strike an appropriate balance between curbing smuggling and reaping earnings from cross-border trade of agricultural-related commodities.

Due to the high demand for staple food in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, previous governments restricted this trade, by putting in place measures to stop the trend to avoid the shortage of mealie meals in local markets.

But Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo says continued inefficiencies and disruptions to cross-border trade presented significant challenges to the growth of the agriculture sector.

Mr. Mtolo is of the view that for agriculture to be profitable for farmers, transforming the marketing and trading structure remains key.
