Govt vows to support film, arts industry

Paul Shalala-Government has pledged to support the film industry because it has the potential to create jobs and promote innovation in the country.

Copperbelt Province Minister ELISHA MATAMBO says the film industry can develop the country because the industry can create jobs through productions.

Speaking when he officiated at the eighth Sotambe Film and Arts Festival which was held in Kitwe last night, Mr. MATAMBO said when the film industry is fully harnessed, young people will stay away from vices such as political violence, gender based violence
and drug abuse.

And Festival Director DANNY MWALE said the film industry is a sleeping giant which can employ thousands of people if it is well supported.

Mr MWALE disclosed that since he started organising the Sotambe Film and Arts Festival in 2014 with his co-director MARTINA MWANZA, the event has become more attractive and competitive.

He said this year, over 300 films were entered from all parts of African which shows that the festival is now international.

The biggest winner of the night was Lusaka based film maker CECILIA MWANSA who walked away with two awards: BEST SHORT FILM and BEST FEMALE FILM MAKER AWARDS.

Other winners were several local film makers and some from Zimbabwe, South Africa and Malawi.

Nkana Member of Parliament BINWELL MPUNDU and Ugandan artist LEONARD AMANYA graced the event.
