GOVT URGED TO REFRAIN FROM ANY FORM OF ABUSE OF CITIZENS AS ZAMBIA COMMEMORATES AFRICA FREEDOM DAY

By Lukundo Nankamba

As Zambia joins the rest of the world in commemorating Africa Freedom Day, Operation Young Vote –OYV- has advised the UPND government to refrain from any form of abuse of office, abuse of the law and abuse of citizens.

OYV Executive Director Guess Nyirenda notes with concern that abuse of the law to suppress divergent voices, grand corruption and greedy accumulation of wealth as observed in the previous regime at the expense of the majority poor citizens was not a reflection of freedom.

He says instead, the UPND government should concentrate on championing the agenda they have already set of law reforms, fighting any forms of corruption, creating an enabling environment for every sector to participate and thrive as well as actualizing decentralization.

Meanwhile, Transparency International Zambia –TIZ- has observed that high levels of corruption remains a major cause of food insecurity and malnutrition in Africa.

In his message to commemorate Africa Freedom Day under the theme “strengthening resilience in nutrition and food security on the African continent”, TIZ Executive Director Maurice Nyambe says the rot of corruption and indifference of governments towards the people are key factors that must be addressed to solve the problem of food insecurity and malnutrition in Africa.

And Democratic Party -DP- Leader Harry Kalaba
says true freedom will only be actualized when the wealth of the country is given back to citizens both economically and morally.
