By Tinkerbel Mwila & Balewa Zyuulu

The National Union for Small Scale Farmers in Zambia-NUSFAZ -is calling on government to come to the aid of farmers whose seeds failed to geminate because of the drought experienced early this month.

In an interview, NUSFAZ executive director ebony Lolozhi says government should consider supplying the affected with new seed stocks as a package under the disaster management and mitigation unit-DMMU.

Meanwhile, Mr Lolozhi has urged farmers across the country to start insuring their crops to hedge against such problems.
Mr. Lolozhi also says farmers must adopt farming methods of preserving water and desist from old farming methods that contribute to deforestation.

And Kanchibiya Member of Parliament Sunday Chanda has advised government to provide early maturity seed to farmers in affected areas for replanting.

Mr Chanda is also calling on the ministry of agriculture to provide a comprehensive update on the anticipated impact of the dry spell on next year’s agricultural production in his next ministerial brief.
