Govt to Improve Access to Justice, Rule of Law

Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo says Government will put in place policies and strategies to improve access to justice, observance of the rule of law and human rights.Mr. Kampyongo says his ministry is working hard to ensure that the Zambia Police Service is equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide an efficient and effective policing service.Speaking when he opened the democratic policing workshop in Lusaka today, Mr. Kampyongo also said the police service has over the years been undertaking police reform initiatives to strengthen democratic policing.He has also commended the Africa Criminal Justice Reform and the Zambia Law Development Commission for closely examining the police service and looking for ways of advancing democratic policing.And Zambia Law Development Commission Chairperson Roydah Kaoma says several human rights annual reports reveal that the police do not adhere to laid down procedures which results in abuse of power.Mrs. Kaoma said incidents of arrests without a warrant are very common and this has created mistrust among members of the public.
