GOVT. TO CONDUCT HEADCOUNT ON GIRLS IN SCHOOLS

(ZANIS) Government has announced plans to collect information on the number of girls in schools in order to provide for the smooth distribution of sanitary towels.

Gender Minister Elizabeth Phiri says government is coming up with new ways of collecting data for the number of girls in schools, in order to ensure that they all get an equal share of the sanitary distribution.

This follows the suspension of the data mapping programme that was initially aimed at capturing the number of girls in schools with a view to provide them with sanitary towels.

Ms. Phiri said the exercise was suspended due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and has regretted the turn of events.

She said despite the setbacks, the Ministry of Gender is set to sit with the Ministry of General Education to strategise on new ways of capturing the data.

ZANIS reports that Ms. Phiri expressed sadness that the COVID-19 has posed a major challenge on the project.

She added that once the project is implemented, government intends on extending it to the orphanages in order for vulnerable girls to also benefit from the sanitary towel distribution exercise.
