Govt to address challenges in higher learning institutions – HH

By Ruth Chayinda

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA says Government will ensure that it addresses the challenges that public higher learning institutions are facing.

President HICHILEMA says Government is alive to the challenges which range from limited accommodation, sanitation and legacy issues such as payment of pensions.

He says Government, the University of Zambia -UNZA Council and management should work closely to ensure that the problems at the institution are resolved.

Addressing UNZA students, President HICHILEMA noted that Government has reintroduced the meal allowances so that students concentrate on their studies and has urged learners to focus on education as it is the best investment.

President HICHILEMA further stated that all the incentives being reintroduced such as free education, meal allowances and increased allocations for student loans are as a result of the votes he received in the last election.

Speaking at the same event, Education Minister DOUGLAS SYAKALIMA announced that President HICHILEMA has adopted the entire TP block 5 at the University.

Mr. SYAKALIMA said the President has also directed that a borehole be drilled at the TP 5 hostel.

And UNZA Acting Vice Chancellor ANNE SIKWIBELE said the institution is faced with infrastructure challenges at both the main and Ridgeway campus.

Professor SIKWIBELE also called on Government to help complete the hostels at the learning institution.

Meanwhile UNZASU President CHANDRA CHOONGO called on Government to consider increasing the number of students receiving bursaries.

Mr. CHOONGO also called on Government to increase the meal allowance.

Meanwhile President HICHILEMA has been inducted into the UNZA Alumni hall of fame for his outstanding performance when he was a student at the institution.
