Govt launches Pre feasibility study for electric car battery project

Government has launched the Pre feasibility study for the electric vehicle battery project which was signed last year between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo -DRC.

Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister CHIPOKA MULENGA says once operational the project will add value to mineral resources and strengthen Zambia’s currency.

Mr. MULENGA says Government is pleased that another step has been taken towards the actualisation of the Zambia – DRC joint initiative on the establishment of a value chain in the electric vehicle, battery precursors and clean energy sector.

Speaking during the launch, he said his Ministry will be on hand to support the consultancy team and ensure the exercise is conducted successfully without delays.

Meanwhile, Mines Minister PAUL KABUSWE said it is high time Zambia benefitted from its minerals.

And United Nations Economic Commission for Africa -UNECA- Representative ISATOU GAYE said her organisation is committed to providing technical support for the successful implementation of the project.

Africa Export -Import Bank AFRIEXIMBANK Senior Manager DECENT CHISAMU said the bank will expedite the process and ensure that the report is presented within 5 or 6 months.

And Land Concessionaire PHESTO MUSONDA said the electric car battery initiative will be a game changer for the country’s economic recovery.
