GOVT ENGAGES BRE ON MORE HERITAGE SITES

By Brian Mwale

Government is engaging the Barotse Royal Establishment -BRE- to open more heritage sites in Western Province as part of increasing the time that tourists spend in Zambia.

Ministry of Tourism Permanent Secretary Auxilia Ponga says Western Province has a rich heritage which is key to the growth of the tourism industry.

Speaking during a meeting with Barotse Royal Establishment -BRE- Ngambela, Manyando Mukela at the Kuta, Dr. Ponga said declaring the Barotse Flood Plains a world heritage site under UNESCO would open up the province to global tourists.

She said government can only propose the move and is looking to successful engagements with the BRE over the matter, but the decision entirely remains to the BRE.

Dr. Ponga further stated that government is waiting for a report from ZEMA over the preservation of Makono Royal Village where Lozi Queen Mbuyu Wa Mwambwa was buried about 4-hundred years ago.

And the Ngambela said the BRE is keen on opening its heritage and augment the country’s tourism package.

He thanked the Worldwide Fund for Nature -WWF- Zambia for its commitment and support both moral and financially towards efforts to preserve Makono.
