The Civil Society Scaling up Nutrition Alliance CSO-SUN is disappointed that government has continued to ignore expert warnings on the current hunger situation in the country.

Following a three day tour of Lunga District in Luapula Province undertaken by CSO-SUN this month to get first-hand information on the current hunger situation, it has been revealed that the district did not harvest any maize or cassava this year as all crops were destroyed by the floods.

CSO-SUN Country Coordinator Mathew Mhuru tells Phoenix News that at the beginning of this year, the alliance had conducted a survey of the hunger situation in Gwembe District and gave recommendations which were not taken on board by government.

Mr Mhuru adds that recent findings of Lunga district in Luapula Province must be taken serious as the impact of the hunger situation may be a huge cost on government.

And Disaster and Mitigation Unit National Coordinator, Chanda Kabwe says the hunger situation in Lunga is an emergency.

Mr Kabwe says the hunger situation which has affected over 60,000 households is due to the floods experienced in the area and has assured that government is already providing relief support and emergency cash transfers with the support from cooperating partners in order to ensure no one dies of hunger.
