GOVT CAUTIONED AGAINST SUCCUMBING TO CALLS TO RE-INTRODUCE FUEL SUBSIDIES

By Michael Kaluba

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions-ZCTU- is urging government to implement measures to cushion the impact of the high cost of living for workers as opposed to succumbing to calls by some stakeholders to re-introduce subsidies on fuel.

ZCTU President Chishimba Nkole says government should focus on developing new strategies to match up with the original cost of fuel without the subsidies and ensure workers do not feel the impact that the decision to remove subsidies on fuel is having on their day-to-day livelihood.

Mr. Nkole has also highlighted that the first quarter of 2022 has been tough for the average worker mainly due to price hikes due to high fuel prices but is of the view that it will be retrogressive for the country to resume subsidizing the energy sector.

And Mr. Nkole argues that the monthly reviews on fuel pump prices have caused a level of unpredictability in Zambia’s economy as prices fluctuate every month but hasten mentioned that the labour movement will continue to represent the interest of the workers.
