Govt Cancels Permit To Rail Private Developer

Government has cancelled a permit given to a private developer to divert 3 .7 kilometers of Zambia Railway line in Kitwe’s Mindola area. The private developer had applied for the diversion of the rail line to accommodate illegal developers.Transport and Communication Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya says the permit has been cancelled because Zambia Railways cannot give up land which has title in preference for private land.Mr Kafwaya says all stakeholders like the planning authorities need to be engaged before such an undertaking. The minister was speaking at a media briefing after a consultative meeting between private developers, Zambia Railways and the Ministry of Transport. The Minister has since warned people to desist from buying land which belongs to Zambia Railways. And Zambia Railway Board Chairperson Lubinda Linyama said effective tomorrow, demolition of all structures built on Zambia Railways land will be done.Mr Linyama said this is in line with the notice which was issued two years ago.He said the noticed will now be enforced by demolishing all illegal structures starting tomorrow. And Zambia Railways Managing Director Christopher Musonda said there is need to preserve railway land for future development.
