Govt appeals to chiefs to help monitor fish ban

The government has called for the participation of Chiefs in the enforcement of fish bans on rivers and lakes.Fisheries and Livestock Minister Nkandu Luo says seasonal fish bans will not yield any positive results if chiefs are not involved.Professor Luo says the country risks depleting its fish stocks in major water bodies if people continue using illegal fishing methods.She says this when she addressed seventeen chiefs in Samfya District of Luapula Province.The minister informed the traditional leaders that her ministry is working on alternative livelihoods to help the fishermen and women during periods of the fish bans.Professor Luo says government will empower the people through livestock stocking and restocking programmes.She says government will also provide fingerlings for aquaculture production under the Zambia Aquaculture Enterprise Development Project.And speaking on behalf of other traditional leaders,senior chief Puta of Chiengi urged government to strengthen the punishment for offenders.
