Govt Amending Environmental Management Act

By Michael Kaumba

Government is amending the Environmental Management Act to stiffen punishment against those flouting environmental laws.

Green Economy and Environment Minister COLLINS NZOVU says it is apparent that the current laws are not stiff enough to punish offenders, some of whom have continued to abrogate them at will.

Mr. NZOVU says under the new laws fines and cancellation of operating licences will be enhanced for breach of the environmental law.

The Minister said this when he inspected Orezone mining and exploration company in MUMBWA District where it was established that the firm is discharging effluents into the ground thereby polluting the underground water system.

And OREZONE MINING and Exploration Limited Général Manager VUSO MOYO admitted that the company will work on the areas of concern raised by the Minister.
