Four Hijacked Zambian Trucks Recovered As Govt Assures Of Trucker’s Safety

South African police in Gauteng Province have recovered four Zambian trucks that were hijacked in that country in the early hours of yesterday.
Three of the trucks were found abandoned in the industrial area of Steeledale, about 15 kilometers from the hijacking scene in Wadeville, Germiston while the other truck was also found abandoned around Dragon City area within Johannesburg.
According to information made available to the Zambian Mission in Pretoria, the four trucks were recovered by South African police in conjunction with a private vehicle tracking firm that the companies had engaged to provide tracking system for their trucks.
Locations of the abandoned trucks were discovered by following signals that were transmitted by trackers that were installed on the trucks
The trucks have since been parked at the South African police FNB impounding yard in Soweto awaiting further investigations and all four Zambian drivers that were victims of the hijacking are still in South Africa also awaiting for further instructions.
In a statement issued to Phoenix News by First Secretary Press and Public Relations at the Zambian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, Naomi Nyawali, authorities indicated that no arrests have been made so far in connection with the matter but that all the vehicle engines they were carrying destined for reconditioning at some garages were missing.
Meanwhile, Government has assured truck drivers traversing between Zambia and South Africa that their safety concerns were have been attended to by both governments.
Home Affairs Minister, Stephen Kampyongo said government has ensured that the continued bilateral relationship between Zambia and South Africa will help curtail the acts of violence targeted at foreign nationals and their property witnessed recently.
He said the South African government had given assurances that the trucks will travel without hindrances or threats to drivers.
He said the recent reported case where four trucks were robbed is being investigated and could be a mere act of criminality separate from the matters that the two governments have been dealing with.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kampyongo said Zambia had welcomed the apology rendered and regret expressed by President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa on the attacks on foreign nationals.
Mr. Kampyongo said this in Addis Ababa when he traveled to Egypt enroute Ethiopia where he will attend a Pan-African forum on migration being held in Cairo.
