FOREIGN INVESTORS TOLD TO OFFER GOOD WORKING CONDITIONS

By Ruth Chayinda

Information and Media Permanent Secretary KENNEDY KALUNGA has urged foreign investors to create a conducive working environment for the workers.

Mr. KALUNGA says investors should ensure the workers’ wellbeing is improved so that they can effectively contribute to increased productivity.

He notes that investors should also adhere to the country’s laws and regulations.

Speaking when he toured various companies in Kabwe in the company of Central Province Permanent Secretary MILNER MWANAKAMPWE, Mr. KALUNGA said the investors should also ensure workers are protected by providing safety gear.

Among the companies visited by the delegation are SABLE ZINC, SAN HE Manufacturing Zambia, San He logistics and transport in Kabwe.

The companies were praised for their efforts to improve the welfare of the workers and for their commitment to corporate social responsibility.

When the delegation visited Datong, they expressed disappointment at the way management is treating its workers and has since given them a one month ultimatum to rectify all the challenges highlighted.

And Mr. MWANAKAMPWE said there is need for the relevant authorities to relook at the minimal wage for those working in the manufacturing and mining sector.

He said the current minimum wage is too little to apply to those in the manufacturing and mining sector.

Mr. MWANAKAMPWE also encouraged the foreign investors in the province to consider partnering with the local communities through giving them an opportunity to supply materials to them.

The Central Province PS also urged the investors to give priority to the local people to take up jobs instead bringing foreigners to take up jobs that can be done by Zambians.

Meanwhile, Director Mines FRED BANDA urged youths to come up with cooperatives and give the ministry coordinates of where they are operating from so that they could be presented with a license to operate.
