FMD VACCINATION KICKS OFF IN NALOLO

(NAIS) Fisheries and Livestock Minister MAKOZO CHIKOTE says the government will introduce legislation and systems that will help to facilitate livestock productivity in the country.

Speaking when he launched the Foot and Mouth Disease -FMD- vaccination in Nalolo district of Western Province, Mr. CHIKOTE explained that among the issues being worked on are the laws that will enhance livestock transportation and livestock cleansing.

He notes that diseases such as FMD and contagious bovine pleura-pneumonia -CBPP- among others have continued to reduce livestock population countrywide hence the need to develop more regulations aimed at preventing diseases.

Mr. CHIKOTE observes that the delayed response to disease outbreaks have led to the country losing millions of kwacha and shunning of potential investors to invest in the sector.

He is optimistic that if the sector is properly managed, it is capable of removing people out of poverty and contribute to the country’s Gross Domestic Product-GDP.

And Western Province Minister KAPELWA MBANGWETA has urged farmers to take advantage of the Stocking and Restocking programmes which government is undertaking to increase their livestock production.

Meanwhile, Professional Insurance corporation Zambia representative NAWA LIKANDO called on livestock farmers across the country to insure their livestock to prevent losses in an event of a disease outbreak.
