FMD SURVEILLANCE HEIGHTENED

Government has heightened surveillance across the country in order to avert any reoccurrence of Foot and Mouth Disease -FMD-.

Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Permanent Secretary ANN SONGOLO says vaccinations have commenced in some districts.

Speaking in an interview with ZNBC News in Lusaka, Dr. SONGOLO said government intends to increase the production of Livestock in the country this year.

And Dr. SONGOLO disclosed that the National Animal Health and National Aquaculture and Fisheries policies have been concluded and submitted to cabinet for approval.

She said the process to amend the Animal Identification Act which will be called the Animal Identification and Traceability Act is currently being drafted.

Dr. SONGOLO said the amendment is meant to expand the definition and properly explain Animal Identification.

She said the ministry has called for further submissions from all stakeholders.

Dr. SONGOLO said the process is expected to be concluded in the first quarter of the year.
