FARMERS ADVISED TO BE PROACTIVE

(ZANIS) Government has advised farmers to become proactive and tap into the emerging market in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo -DRC- by diversifying their agricultural produce.

Mufulira District Commissioner SABOI KABIKA says government is determined to ensure that the economic diversification policy is strengthened NOT just at household level, but including sustainable land management practices for sustainable productivity.

Speaking during the District Agricultural and Commercial Show in Mufulira District, Mrs. KABIKA said government does not support illegal trade such as smuggling but encourages farmers to obtain export permits in order for them to trade freely.

She encouraged farmers to practice crop diversification as one of the innovations that will result in accessing balanced diets and nutrition improvement at household and national level.

And Mufulira show Society Chairperson STEPHAN MUMBA said farmers are desperate to know from government whether the Farmer support input program -FISP- will continue has this will help them plan properly for 2022/2023 farming season.

Mr. MUMBA added that government should consider rehabilitating all the feeder roads in the district because farmers are facing challenges transporting farm produce to the market.
