El Nino weakens but above normal temperatures are predicted

By Arnold Tutu

The World Meteorological Organization -WMO- has described the 2023 – 2024 El Niño weather which has affected Zambia as one of the five strongest on record.

The organisation says the El Nino which has reached its peak is now gradually weakening but will continue to impact the global climate in the coming months.

WMO Secretary-General CELESTE SAULO says the El Nino phenomenon will fuel the heat trapped by greenhouse gases from human activities.

Professor SAULO says above normal temperatures are predicted over almost all land areas between March and May.

Typical effects of El Nino events on temperature patterns for each region. Key trends include warming in South America, southeast Asia and southern Africa. Cooling in parts of North America. [June 2023]

MEANWHILE, the Zambia Meteorological Department has advised farmers to inspect crops for damage, disease and pests.

The public has also been advised to take caution when going for outdoor activities.
