ECZ Maintains Al Ghurair To Print Ballot Papers

Ballot PapersThe Electoral Commission of Zambia was once again pushed to state the obvious by reiterating that there will be no turning back on the Dubai based Al Ghurair printing ballot papers and the holding of the referendum alongside general elections.

During a stakeholders meeting at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre ECZ chairperson Justice Esau Chulu said the matter concerning Al Ghurair was settled with the Zambia Public Procurement Authority giving the electoral body the all clear to award the tender.

Justice Chulu said that there had been deliberate machinations to have raise suspicion at every turn and cast doubt on the credibility of the ECZ.

He said that no one had come up with credible evidence against Al Ghurair in terms of its reputation to fail to credibly print ballot papers.

He said the Dubai company had presented the most technically feasible bid providing more likely to avoid conflict points.

Justice Chulu said the commission had given political parties up to June 10, 2016 to provide any evidence of foreigners having been registered as voters for the August 11 elections.

He said the referendum will go on as planned alongside the general elections.

FDD leader Edith Nawakwi caused a stir when she protested the removal of journalists during the plenary session.

However her protestations were not heeded to as the scribes were asked to leave during the gathering exclusive to stakeholders.

He said that political parties will have their agents sponsored by ECZ to go to Dubai and witness the printing of ballot papers.

Justice Chulu clarified that election agents will be allowed to use phones at polling stations after the count to transmit to their respective centres.
