ECZ Condemns political violence

By Mary Kachepa

The Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- has warned that erring political parties participating in the Muchinda Ward by-election in Serenje District will be disqualified if the acts of violence continue.

ECZ Corporate Affairs Manager PATRICIA LUHANGA says the Commission will be compelled to invoke the provisions of the Electoral Process Act which includes disqualification against erring political parties in the remaining days should the acts of violence linger.

Ms. LUHANGA says the commission will not hesitate to suspend campaigns in areas where violence occurs.

She says it is regrettable and worrying to start recording violence with just a few days before the poll on April 20, 2023.

Ms. LUHANGA says the Commission strongly condemns the acts of violence and calls on all participating political parties to adhere to the campaign timetable which was developed and agreed upon by all participating political parties after nominations.

In a statement to ZNBC News, Ms. LUHANGA reminded all participating political parties in the by-elections that the Electoral Code of Conduct applies to the period of campaigns and must be adhered to without exception.

She has called on all political parties’ leadership to prevail over their supporters to be peaceful, tolerant and promote co-existence in the conduct of campaigns.
