Dry spell worries South farmers

Angela Limwanya-Some small scale farmers of Malime village in Livingstone’s Kasiya ward are worried that the dry spells being experienced in the area may affect food security for most households that depend on farming for a living.

One of the farmers, BRENDA JALABANI has told ZNBC News that most farmers that depend on rainfall have not planted for the 2021/2022 farming season.

Another farmer, CHILALA SIALANGA has said farmers in the area are hoping rains will normalize by January 15th, 2022 so that farmers can plant their maize.

Mr. SIALANGA has stated that farmers usually give themselves a deadline to plant their maize and are hoping to plant early maturing seed should the rains start.

Meanwhile, NATHAN MALIME has appealed to the government to help small scale farmers with boreholes to enable them grow vegetables in the absence of the rains to sustain their livelihoods.
