Dr Mujajati Speaks Out On Homosexuality

#HOMOSEXUALITY

From which perspective? From a medical stand point the debate is not as conclusive as you might wish for. This issue has continued to raise very difficult questions.
Is it a genetic disorder? The responsible gene has not been isolated. The question here is, is it that the gene is not there or that it is yet to be discovered? As you know in science, as technology advances new information might come to the surface. For now the popular view is that it is not a genetic disorder.

Is it a disorder? Well, previously it was listed along with other sexual disorders (mental illnesses) such as desire to have sex with animals or finding sexual pleasure in bizarre items like human faeces. However, as you might be aware it was later declassified or removed from the list of mental disorders. There are some who still believe that it is a mental disorder which should be treated. The view that it is a disorder is premised on the fact that there are cases where people have stopped homosexual behaviour after undergoing cognitive behaviour therapy of one form or another.

Are there medical risks that come with homosexuality? The straight answer is yes. For male homosexuals, the risk of HIV transmission is a lot higher, faecal incontinence, rectal cancer has also been reported among others too numerous to mention.

Can you diagnose homosexuality on physical examination or laboratory tests? I don’t see how. Remember i said it is not classified as a disease. Unless the client says that they engage in that type of sex a doctor can only suspect or speculate.

LESSON: For the most part homosexuality is a moral issue. As with all moral issues a lot of what is said or done depends on the collective conscience of a given society. It is much like the question of the existence of GOD, such debates never end. At this time homosexuality is a moral wrong in Zambia and that is the position of our collective conscience. We also have to realise that moral positions are very volatile in nature in that as information becomes more available societies have been seen to change their minds. Remember how condoms were fought against not so long ago and how so many people got infected with HIV and died as a result here in Zambia? SO, homosexuality remains a moral wrong and let the Zambian conscience deal with the matter by itself without undue persuasion or influence.
