DR CONGO ELECTIONS: AU WEIGHS IN

African Union Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat has advised concerned stakeholders in the just ended presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo -DRC- to act in a way that consolidates democracy and preserves peace in the country.
Mr. Mahamat who took cognizance of the provisional results of the presidential election in the DRC, congratulated all stakeholders and relevant national institutions for conducting elections deemed satisfactory by African Union Election Observer Mission led by Dioncounda Traore Mali’s former President.
The Chairperson advised political players with intentions of challenging the results to do this peacefully through avenues provided by existing national legal framework.
Mr. Mahamat emphasised that regardless of the final results of the elections, the situation in DRC requires genuine National consensus based on respect for democratic principles and human rights.
This is according to a statement made available to the Zambia Embassy in Addis Ababa by the Peace and Security Department of the African Union.
The statement has also been availed to ZNBC News by First Secretary for Press and Tourism at the Zambian Embassy in Addis Ababa Inutu Mwanza.
