DC SUSPENDS MINING OPERATIONS

By ZANIS:

The District Administration in Sinazongwe District has directed the immediate suspension of operations at Collum Coal Mine following concerns on operational safety.

This follows the death of a miner underground on Tuesday, an incident that occurred barely months after another miner died during underground operations.

District Commissioner, Nchimunya Siakole has demanded that mine operations be suspended for three weeks to pave way for thorough investigations by competent and mandated government institutions.

He says there have been growing concerns by the people in Sinazongwe over the poor safety at the underground Collum Coal mine, which has resulted in serious injuries and deaths of some miners.

Mr. Siakole says despite government’s resolve to create a conducive environment for investor operations, and the continued partnership with investors in bridging the unemployment gap, government will however not tolerate any companies that sacrifice the lives of employees for the sake of generating profits.

But Collum Coal Mine Manager Getson Muntali told the District Commissioner that the recent death of the miner is regrettable and promised to improve safety conditions.
