Dan Pule, 3 Others Petition ConCourt To Declare Pres. Lungu Eligible For 2021

Dan PulePresident Edgar Lungu’s 2021 bid has gone to the Constitutional Court with Christian Democratic Party leader Dan Pule leading other opposition parties in filing the petition.

Pule together with Wright Musona of Zambia Republican Party, Peter Chanda of New Congress Party and Robert Mwanza from the Citizens Democratic Party has taken the matter to the Constitutional Court also asking the court to declare that President Lungu can contest the 2021 elections.

Pule and his group contend that President Lungu’s election on January 20, 2015 did not amount to a full term as he only ruled for one year six months.

The petitioners contend that President Lungu only completed President Michael Sata’s term of office with August 11 2016 being the first full five year term for the Head of State.

They want the court to declare that President Lungu’s first term of office commenced on September 13th, 2016 when he was sworn in as President for a term of five years.

A debate has raged in the country after President Lungu announced that he was eligible to contest the 2021 elections which would not amount to a third term but a second full five year term.

President Lungu advised anybody doubting his position to seek the interpretation of the law in the Constitutional Court.
