Curtail water pollution activities,ZEMA told

Wilson Mulinda-Green Economy and Environment Minister COLLINS NZOVU has tasked the Zambia Environmental Management Agency -ZEMA- to curtail activities that led to water pollution and deforestation in Mkushi District.

Mr. NZOVU notes that the CHIBEFWE River is a source of water for consumption for Mkushi residents, and polluting the water is risking the health of residents.

He is however impressed that the North Swaka Forest is being well maintained by the large scale farmers who have engaged into aforestation.

The Minister was speaking shortly after touring the North Swaka Forest reserve to appreciate the initiatives that the farmers have put in place as well as the destruction caused by mining.

And the minister also warned small scale miners in the area that they risk being prosecuted if they are operating illegally.

Meanwhile, North Swaka Trust Board Chairperson ANDREW HUNTER said his institution is happy to partner with Government to expand their produce, in turn supporting economic growth.

Mr. HUNTER said there is need to bring on board small scale farmers to educate them about the dangers of charcoal burning and how it affects climate change.
