Cultural beliefs affect women football – FAZ

By Paul Shalala

The Football Association of Zambia -FAZ- says cultural beliefs are hampering the development of women’s football especially in rural areas.

FAZ Central Province Chairperson CHISANGA PULE says some traditional beliefs keep girls away from football and make the sport a preserve for boys.

Speaking during the Awards Gala for the Central Province 2022/2023 season in Kabwe last night, PULE said his executive is doing everything possible to sensitize girls and parents on the importance of women football.

He said the development of the Division One Women’s League in Central Province is at its peak as a number of teams now have good players and sponsorship.

And Afriseed has disclosed that so far, it has spent over one million kwacha in sponsoring the Division One Women’s League in Central Province during the last season.

Afriseed Sales and Marketing Manager CHRISTOPHER KUNDA pledged that his institution will continue supporting women’s football in Central Province so that it can grow into a competitive sport.

Meanwhile, Central Province Deputy Permanent Secretary GODFREY CHITAMBALA has pledged government support to football.

CHITAMBALA said sport has the potential to unite the nation.

During the awards, Sable Nua Girls FC striker RUTH MUWOWO was awarded top scorer award after scoring 74 goals last season while in the men’s category, SAVIOR PHIRI of Mines United bagged the top scorer award with 22 goals.

Another highlight of the awards was MULENGA MPANDAMWIKE, a player from Kabwe Mines Soccer Academy who got the most outstanding player award for women.
